Chami Murmu, a passionate environmentalist from India, has led a remarkable journey in her efforts to restore the greenery of Jharkhand and uplift rural women. As the founder of Sahayogi Mahila Bagraisai, she has overseen the planting of more than 3 million trees across the state. Her dedication has empowered over 30,000 women through self-help groups, earning her the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2024. Murmu's story is one of resilience and determination, transforming her from a humble village girl to an environmental champion.

Born in 1973 in Bagraisai village, Murmu faced early hardships with the loss of her father and elder brother. Despite these challenges, she took on the responsibility of caring for her siblings and sick mother, working as a laborer to support her family. Her journey took a turn in 1988 when she discovered the importance of tree plantations and environmental conservation.

Inspired by this revelation, Murmu initiated tree planting efforts in her village, despite facing opposition from male community members and threats from the timber mafia. Undeterred, she founded Sahayogi Mahila Bagraisai in 1996 with just 11 members. The organization established nurseries and planted saplings in barren lands, eventually expanding their activities to encompass water conservation, organic farming, women’s empowerment, and education.

Through her leadership, the organization grew to over 3,000 members and planted millions of trees in 500 villages. Murmu's tireless efforts earned her national and international recognition, including prestigious awards such as the Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Award in 1996 and the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2019.

Murmu's story, often likened to that of the "Lady Tarzan of Jharkhand," alongside fellow activist Jamuna Tudu, serves as an inspiration for many. Her journey exemplifies the transformative power of passion and perseverance in making a positive impact on the environment and society at large.
